Facebook recommends nearby friends to contact

Published on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in

Over the past week, Facebook users have begun reporting a feature which notifies them of nearby friends who they should get in touch with. The feature is extremely basic, but could unlock a lot of value.

Right now the feature is nothing more than a teaser that shows up at the top right of the site when a user logs in. So far the users who have reported this feature to us are those who logged into Facebook while out of town.

For many users, Facebook's contact list is one of the most important features, but throughout the past Facebook design iterations the contact list has somehow become completely neglected. For the time being, this appears to be an extremely basic feature which is focused on increasing engagement (and page views) and less about improving the user experience.

Apparently, this feature tracks your IP address location or your Places check-ins.

Have you seen this new feature yet? Do you find it useful or useless? To me, it's a great way for people with large friend lists to see who's nearby while they're out of town... but that's not most people's case.
